Pakistani Diaspora

Importance of Pakistani Diaspora in the National Economy* πŸ‡΅πŸ‡°πŸ’Έ

1. FX Lifeline: Remittances = $38.3B in FY25. That’s 6.5% of Pakistan’s GDP and covers 60-70% of the trade deficit. Without diaspora, PKR would be under way more pressure.

2. 2nd largest FX source:

After exports. More stable than FDI/FII. Gulf workers send monthly “salary cheques” regardless of global market cycles.

3. Consumption engine:

Remittances directly fund household spending - education, health, housing, small businesses. 1 $ sent = 2.5x GDP multiplier domestically.

4. Soft power + skills:

9M+ Pakistanis abroad act as brand ambassadors, investors via Roshan Digital Accounts, and skilled labor export.

Percentage in total population

- Pakistan population 2026: 245M

- Overseas Pakistanis: 9.2M including children

- Diaspora share: 3.7% of total population

So 1 out of every 27 Pakistanis lives abroad. But that 3.7% sends 6.5% of GDP back home.

    2021:    288,467, # COVID recovery year

    2023:    862,625, # Record year

    2024:    709,228 # Still high despite slowdown

Total moved abroad 2021-2024: 2,692,659

Avg per year: 673,165

Why the surge 2021-2024:

1. Push factor:

35%+ inflation, unemployment, currency depreciation at home.

2. Pull factor:

Saudi Vision 2030, UAE Golden Visa, UK post-Brexit labor shortage. Gulf + Europe opened doors for skilled/unskilled labor.
